A friend once asked me if I knew any beans recipe to go with rice. She was bored with the usual “beans poriyal” and the tam-bram classic “beans parupu usli” (which I just love). I told her this kothamalli beans curry recipe which my mom used to make quite often at home. She tried this and ever since she’s a fan and makes it quite often at home 🙂
As kids, me and my sister were not big fans of the usual beans curry, so mom would make this variation and it was one of my favorites 🙂 This recipe is quite similar to the usual beans curry with coconut. But the addition of coriander and green chilli masala to the beans makes this curry delicious. It goes very well with vathal kuzhambu, dal , sambar or even curd rice. I sometimes eat this with plain rice and a tsp of ghee!
- 500 grams beans
- 3-4 tbsp cup grated coconut
- 3-4 green chillies
- 1/4 cup fully packed coriander leaves
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- a pinch of asafoetida
- 1 tsp urad dhal
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 dried red chillies
- 2 tsp oil (I used coconut oil)
- salt to taste
Chop the beans and wash them thoroughly.
In a pan, add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, red chillies and let the mustard splutter.
Add the chopped beans, turmeric powder and salt to taste. Sprinkle some water in the pan and let it get cooked
Now grind the coconut, coriander leaves and green chilly with a tsp of water into a coarse paste
When the beans are cooked add the ground paste and mix well.
Stir the beans for couple more minutes in medium flame. When done serve hot with rice 🙂
